Visian Toric ICL

ANNOUNCEMENT: Dr. Parkhurst, One of the Nation’s Most Experienced Visian ICL Surgeons, Performs the First Visian Toric ICL in the U.S. Following FDA Approval

What is the Visian Toric ICL?

The Visian Toric ICL is an implantable contact lens used to correct myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. This type of permanent contact lens is placed under the surface of the eye by an eye surgeon, so there is no daily maintenance or cleaning required. Patients who struggle with the ongoing hassle of taking contacts in and out, having them dry out their eyes by the end of the day, remembering to bring cases and solutions when they travel, and tired of the ongoing monthly expense of contact lenses may be ideal candidates for a more permanent solution to their vision problems. The Visian Toric ICL is made of collamer, which is a collagen copolymer that is in sync with our body chemistry. Many organs within the human body, especially the eye, are made of collagen. Therefore, with the Toric ICL, vision can be corrected in a natural way that’s in harmony with our eyes.

Can I get the Visian ICL to Correct My Vision if I have Astigmatism?

At Parkhurst NuVision, we have been offering the Visian ICL to patients with nearsightedness from all over the United States and even those traveling from overseas. Up until recently, patients with astigmatism needed to have a dual procedure or combination type surgery to include the ICL for their myopia and a corneal procedure such as LASIK to correct their astigmatism.

This has been very successful for over a decade. However, some patients are not candidates to have any corneal surgery at all and have been waiting for access to the Toric ICL. Now patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism have another option for their vision, and a great option it is since it can all be done in a single procedure.

When will the toric ICL get approved by the FDA?

For over a decade, up until September 13, 2018, the answer to this question has been: “we’re not sure, but hopefully soon.” Finally, the day has arrived for many of our patients that have been waiting patiently for all these years.

Parkhurst NuVision, in San Antonio Texas, was the first practice to perform the Toric ICL as we launched the procedure in October 2018. We are very excited to be able to offer this option to our patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism.
